The recent fires in Butte County required that we remove all the horses to a safer place and prepare ourselves for possible evacuation. Thanks to many generous offers from friends and One in particular we were able to take all the horses to southern Paradise. Later as the fires were put down we were able to slowly return. Then the City of Paradise was ordered evacuated on the east side because of an advancing line of fire at the west branch of the feather river. This included the Animal Hospital on the Ridge. Animals and equipment were taken to the Ranch for several days and the Hospital was closed. Dense smoke prevented air support and the ground crews were able to establish a large dozer line fire break. The smoke lifted just enough for air support at the last minute and the fire was halted, the mandatory evacuation was lifted and things were put back in order at both locations. The Ranch remains closed as does the campground. The Animal Hospital is fully open and operating at normal hours. When the fire was approaching the Ranch area a fire truck and crew from L.A. was dispatched to the house for structure protection. The 4 firemen had spent 10 days working on the fire lines and were quite worn out when they arrived. We treated them to coffee, soft drinks snacks and showers. For a little R and R Dr. Sue brought one of the Fjord horses, Blossom, over to the truck and the firefighters were posing with her in full gear. One had never been on a horse so he was mounted up and given his fire axe. Great pictures. The Captain even was able to put his helment on her. Now we have A Norwegian Fire Horse. The Captain also gave us an evaluation to help in further fire protection which began us on a brush clean up in the steep pasture below the residence. Too steep for the machinery we have at the ranch, 2 horses, Arthur and Blossom were harnessed by Dr. Sue assisted by Mike and used to haul cut brush out into a more accessable area to load on a truck. Photos were sent to the Enterprise Record newspaper in Chico. You can see the photos at this link. type "brush" into the search box. Or click on the "fire horses" link on the top left of this page.
